I met Suzie at a photography workshop a few months ago and it was so fun to discover that we’re leading almost parallel lives! She has two darling kiddos that are the same age as my two (but she has girls, whereas I have boys) and we both took our love and passion for photographing our own children as inspiration for starting photography businesses last year. After spending some time shooting photographs together we decided that it would be fun to swap family sessions. As photographers, we’re always behind the camera. So while our children our more than adequately documented, we have fears that they will look back and never have any idea what their dear mothers looked like because we were never in front of the camera!

So, we picked a location and set a date and when that day rolled around, the rains came down. We prayed and crossed fingers and looked hopefully to the sky, clinging to any tiny bit of blue we could see peeking through the clouds. And about 20 minutes before we were scheduled to start, it looked like maybe, just maybe, our prayers would be answered. We decided to stick to our appointed time and as I pulled into the parking lot, the last of the rain sprinkles miraculously stopped!

So, we walked around the puddles and started shooting! Wet grass might not be good for sitting in, but you’ll never get more bright, vivid, saturated nature colors than right after a rain. Add in some moody clouds and distant mountains and you get a great Montana family photo!

We also found that you don’t need mountains in the backdrop to get an “old west” feel. . .
. . . and with a vintage finish, it really adds to the atmosphere!

While Suzie has hundreds and hundreds of her own photos of her beautiful daughters, I couldn’t resist capturing a few more. One thing us photographer moms always lament is how much our kids hate our cameras–they see them way too often! When mom isn’t the one behind the camera, though, it has a slightly more appealing draw!

I’ll finish with one final image of the whole lovely family. They are a good looking crew, aren’t they? I can’t wait for my own family’s turn in front of the camera this weekend!

OMGoodness, Amy!!! I’m in love with them all! I cannot thank you enough – I can’t wait to get these on my walls – seriously they’re going to be HUGE!!! And I’m very much looking forward to seeing your family on the other side of the camera this weekend. xoxo
I think Suzie’s comment says it all.
You nailed it. Beautiful photos, Amy. I wish I lived closer so you could take ours. I love, love, love the clothes they are wearing.
I agree with Heather, I wish I lived closer so you could take my family’s pictures as well! Beautiful job!
I am wondering where mom’s dress is from? Too cute.
I think she told me she found her dress at Penney’s.
Yes – the dress is from Penny’s. Who’d know it?! I think they carry the same brand at Macy’s, too.
Beautiful pictures!!!
