10 on 10: Palos Verdes {Los Angeles Photographer}

One of my newest favorite places is the Palos Verdes Peninsula, jutting out from Los Angeles into the Pacific.  You climb a significant hill on your drive up to the peninsula, which means that you’re sitting atop stunning cliffs that fall right to the water.  There are gorgeous homes and gorgeous views and plenty of fun places to stop if you’re out for an excursion.  With visitors (my parents) in town last week, I couldn’t resist showing off this jewel, so off we went!

Our first stop — after a few pitstops along Palos Verdes Drive to soak in the scenery — was the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, with views of the Point Vicente Lighthouse.  You can spy Catalina Island off in the distance.

And while coming back for a sunset view from this scene is now on my bucket list, the harsh midday sun does brighten the crashing seas below to a beautiful shade of turquoise.

The Point Vicente Interpretive Center is a whale-watching hub.  There’s a beautiful (and free-of-charge) museum to explore and volunteers are set up on the balcony outside to watch for migrating whales, which travel the channel between here and Catalina.  My youngest son was on the lookout and we actually spotted a couple of whales while on watch!

Although, we had a better view of the life-size models inside the museum!

Some wildlife above the waves put on a nice show, too.

Heading south around the peninsula, our next stop was Abalone Cove Shoreline Park where we enjoyed more fantastic views and a picnic lunch.

Our last stop was Wayfarers Chapel, a small, beautiful church made of glass and stone with beautiful gardens and beautiful views.

Certainly a place of peace and reflection, it was also a fun place for a 5-year-old and 2-year-old to run and be silly.  We had pushed our outing right up to naptime and were in danger of going past the point-of-no-return.  Before complete melt down mode, I managed to get a few pictures of my 5-year-old, and this is one of my favorites:

There you have it, 10 images of one of my favorite places.  If you ever find yourself in Los Angeles with a few free hours, you have to go explore Palos Verdes!

Be sure to visit the other photographer’s taking part in the “10 on 10″ challenge for this year.  Hop on over to North Shore and Lake County, IL Photographer, Britt Anderson’s blog to see 10 fabulous macro images, a perfect welcome for spring!

52 in 2012: Week 13 {planning}

Okay, this is a real stretch. . . I could try to come up with some way to say that this week’s image represents {planning} but it I don’t think I (or you!) would buy it.  So I’m just going to accept the fact that we didn’t do much in the way of {planning} this week.  We did, however, participate in the El Segundo PTA’s Run for Education 5K.  As a business, I was a sponsor of the event, and as a family, we all ran in the race.

My husband willingly agreed to push the kids so that I could run fast.  And even pushing 70+ lbs of kids and a 30 lb stroller, he still ran an impressive 27:13!

As always, you can follow along with several other talented photographers in the Photo-a-week project for 2012. Here’s here’s the list!
Michelle, Heather, Jenn, Heather. Rhonda, Tracey, Stacey, Andrea, Jessica, Amanda, Sarah, Janet, Lesli, Carla, Lena, Rose, Naomi, Tracy, Heidi, Veronica, Amy, Kristin

Fine Art Friday {L.A. Photographer}

It’s time for this month’s fine art image, which is part of the project I’m working on with a group of fabulous women photographers.  Earlier this week, my husband came home with some lovely tulips for me.  It had been a particularly trying day with my strong-willed, potty-training 2-year-old and his sassy 5-year-old brother.  I had sent notice that when he got home from work, he might just have found that had taken off for Mexico, solo!

I’m glad I stuck around. . . his gorgeous gift/peace offering has been wonderful to look at all week.  I love how they almost fall out of the vase, but then perk up with just the slightest and most lovely curve.  And the colors are just so yummy!  A perfect welcome to spring and just what was needed to bring this mother back to sanity.

A spray of yellow and red tulips seems to reach out of a vase to say hello.

Be sure to see what Kay Pickens Fine Art Photography | Columbia, MO has for this month, then follow the links around the circle.  I promise you’ll have a lovely and inspiring few minutes on the web!

Gorgeous! Those are my favorite color of tulip. Did you know that when they start to droop, you can put a penny in the water and they perk right up?nor was it a Nickle. If forget but google is your friend :)

The Best Bread {David Schat’s Bakery Cafe El Segundo}

It’s not a bakery without bread!  Yes, they have breakfast goodies and lunch goodies, and they also have at least a dozen varieties of bread.  I saw the bakers hard at work. . .

And the loaves fresh from the oven. . .

And even more, ready for breaking into and devouring!  This is their signature bread, the Sheepherder Bread.  I love how it gives you a big smile, knowing you’re going to enjoy it!

And it all tastes even better than it looks, believe me! :-)

Stacy - March 28, 2012 - 10:19 am

Yummmmmmmmmy! I love the way you captured the feeling of a warm, wholesome, bakery! Some of those loaves of bread are food art, too! The colors and artisty in your photos as well as the bread are amazing!
