52 in 2012: week 12 {spring}

My confession of the week:  I actually took this image a couple weeks ago.  But I didn’t take it off of my camera until this week.  And it’s perfect for the week’s theme {spring}, so I’m using!

I was in our backyard admiring the rising full moon when I noticed the plum tree was starting to show the first blossoms of spring.  I grabbed my camera and speedlight and went outside to play, creating something a little different than the typical image that comes to mind when you think {spring} but beautiful none-the-less!

A full moon shines through the branches of a plum tree showing spring blossoms.

Lunch at Schat’s {El Segundo Photographer}

I shared some of the delicious breakfast offerings available at David Schat’s Bakery Cafe in El Segundo, California last week and now it’s time for a few of the lunch goodies!  I’m working my way through sampling the entire menu of sandwiches, soups, and salads and I have to say that I’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite.  I think maybe those kitchen workers have some magic deliciousness powder they sprinkle on everything.  Seriously, the food is fantastic!

So, here’s a little peek into the kitchen where the magic happens:

And now just a couple of the tasty menu items.  Warning:  don’t lick your screen!

Bon appetit!

Awarded {Los Angeles Portrait Photographer}

I am excited and honored to learn that one of the prints I entered in the Professional Photographers of America’s (PPA) Western District Photographic Competition was awarded a “Seal of Approval,” and a score “deserving of a merit!”   The District competition is a precursor to PPA’s International Photographic Competition, a world-renowned photographic competition where entries are evaluated against a standard of excellence considering elements of technical expertise along with style, impact, and creativity.

“Deserving of a Merit” is a tough score to earn, so I’m thrilled that this portrait of Sweet Hope was awarded that distinction!  Now it will move to the next level and compete at the International Photographic Competition later this year.

Western District PPA Merit Image for 2012.

The three other images I entered in competition also scored well, solidly in the “Above Average” category!

Little Boys Blue

Trouble in Paradise (Valley)

Setting Jewel

Photography is a constant journey of learning and growing.  Entering competition motivates me , hones and improves my skills, and is one step along the way to earning my Master of Photography degree.

52 in 2012: Week 11 {underneath}

My family just spent the weekend in the mountains, surrounded by snow and enjoying life!  In the 6 months that we’ve lived in Southern California, I must confess that I’ve started getting used to the weather.  But as soon as we got out of L.A. and into the mountains, I was reminded that I truly am a mountain girl at heart.  I guess 3 years living in Montana and 8 years in Colorado will do that to you!

We headed to Mammoth Lakes, CA, and arrived just a few hours before a massive snow storm rolled in.  The next 48 hours brought nearly 3′ of snow and then on the third day, the sun finally emerged.  We headed out on cross country skis through a veritable winter wonderland, under a canopy of evergreens with the sun shining overhead.  The landscape was made even more magical as gusts of wind blew snow off the pine boughs, raining down in a powdery mist.  I can’t think of a more perfect place to be {underneath}.

Sunshine glistens while a cloud of snow blows down from pine trees under a blue sky.

52 in 2012: Week 10 {vegetables}

One of the things I love about living in Southern California is the Farmer’s Markets! Our town has one year-round every Thursday from 3 – 7 p.m. Two blocks of Main Street is closed to traffic and vendors set up tents selling organic produce and delicious street food. It’s our Thursday Night family tradition! And if I find myself needing some produce a day other than Thursday, I only have to head a few miles to Manhattan Beach for their Market, held every Tuesday.

I was quite pleased with my haul from this week and had set up these pictures before I even realized what this week’s theme was — finally, an easy week for me!

So, here it is, what $25 buys you at the El Segundo Farmer’s Market:

resh vegetables from the Farm Market: carrots, apples, tomatoes, artichokes, strawberries, satsumas, and brussels sprouts look delicious
Fresh carrots, apples, artichokes, strawberries, and brussels sprouts look delicious.

Amy, forgive me for missing this last week! What a beautiful photo! That first shot is gorgeous! Love how you lined everything up–even the brussels. :) LOVE brussels!
