Happy Birthday, Yellowstone! {Montana Nature Photographer}

Today marks Yellowstone National Park’s 140th birthday!  Yellowstone is practically in Bozeman’s backyard, so when I lived in Montana we made several trips to the park each year.  It’s one of my favorite places and has such a diverse landscape within its borders.  There are the geysers and thermal features, the soaring mountains, the forest-fire regrowth areas, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Yellowstone Lake.  One could spend months in the park and never see the same scene twice.

Before we moved to California last summer, we made one last trip, staying in cabins along Lake Yellowstone for a night.  I set my alarm for the dark pre-dawn hours and dragged myself out for a dawn photo expedition.  I headed straight for one of my favorite spots in the park, the Hayden Valley.  I got some of my absolute favorite images from the park in that spot a few years earlier.  And in the early morning hours, it did not disappoint.

After soaking in the serenity, I headed south back toward Lake Yellowstone, stopping along the way for some more shots along the river.

I’m not much of a morning person — especially when it involves being up before the sun — but this particular morning, it was worth it.  So serene, refreshing, reflecting, and centering.  I think everyone needs to experience this at least once in your life!  If Yellowstone isn’t on your “bucket list,” please add it!  And while you’re there make sure you get up before the sun at least once.

One more image to share in this post (this was taken later that day) — the iconic bison, whom I consider the unofficial mascot of the park.  Whether in a huge herd or solely resting in the grass, they are such majestic creatures.

These are so impressive!

Beverly Hills {Los Angeles Photographer}

Two of my best girlfriends flew out to L.A. last weekend for a visit.  I gave them a quick tour of my new town, kissed my husband and kids goodbye and we headed over to Beverly Hills for a fabulous Girls Weekend!  We stayed at the quaint Avalon Hotel, enjoying the quiet mid-century modern decor.

We discovered a little stairway to the roof and were treated with a stylish garden and fantastic views of Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles.

Of course we had some dressed-up nights out on the town. . .

And we enjoyed way too many sweet treats, eating our way through L.A. with stops at Bouchon Bakery and Sprinkles Cupcakes!

We did the touristy stops to Hollywood & Highland, seeing the Walk of Fame and Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

We also trekked over to the seaside, driving up the coast to Malibu and cruising the Santa Monica Pier.

We finished up our weekend with lunch at another iconic Los Angeles spot — In-N-Out Burger!

I loved playing tourist in my new hometown, and of course loved hanging with my girls!  Any other great L.A. spots that I need to add to my list?

Oh my goodness, these are so beautiful! So happy you had some time with your girlfriends!

I flew out to CA for the first time a little over a month ago to visit some girlfriends of my own and it is SO beautiful there. You are blessed to live where you do!!

52 in 2012: Week 8 {Romance}

I *almost* missed this week.  And at only 15% of the way into the year, that would have been bad.  After struggling to come up with a concept all week, it finally came to me this afternoon.  So as the sun was setting and shadows getting long, I grabbed my husband and my camera and ran to our front yard.  After fiddling with settings and angles and passing clouds that made the shadows disappear, we finally got a shot!

It’s not technically perfect, but when I think about my husband entertaining my silly request to kiss me in the driveway while juggling (and hiding from the shadow) my camera as at least a dozen cars drove past I know that this is {romance}.  He certainly knows the way to my heart!

As always, you can follow along with several other talented photographers in the Photo-a-week project for 2012. Here’s here’s the list!

Fine Art Friday {Los Angeles Photographer}

It’s time for another installment of “Fine Art Friday” and this month’s image was taken at The Getty Center.  You may recall that my image last month was at the Getty, too, but you’ll see that this image tells quite a different story.  Not only are the grounds and gardens spectacular, the buildings are, too.  The architecture is quite stunning and the lines and the light and the quiet museum-goers just keep drawing me in.

A quiet scene at the Getty Center.

Now, hop on over to Durham NC lifestyle photographer Leigh Ann Hines to see her February Fine Art Friday image.  Make sure you go around the whole circle, I promise you won’t be disappointed. :-)
