52 in 2012: Week 10 {vegetables}

One of the things I love about living in Southern California is the Farmer’s Markets! Our town has one year-round every Thursday from 3 – 7 p.m. Two blocks of Main Street is closed to traffic and vendors set up tents selling organic produce and delicious street food. It’s our Thursday Night family tradition! And if I find myself needing some produce a day other than Thursday, I only have to head a few miles to Manhattan Beach for their Market, held every Tuesday.

I was quite pleased with my haul from this week and had set up these pictures before I even realized what this week’s theme was — finally, an easy week for me!

So, here it is, what $25 buys you at the El Segundo Farmer’s Market:

resh vegetables from the Farm Market: carrots, apples, tomatoes, artichokes, strawberries, satsumas, and brussels sprouts look delicious
Fresh carrots, apples, artichokes, strawberries, and brussels sprouts look delicious.

Amy, forgive me for missing this last week! What a beautiful photo! That first shot is gorgeous! Love how you lined everything up–even the brussels. :) LOVE brussels! I get a CSA box and I often want to photograph the goodies inside bc they are so beautiful in colors and textures. Your shot inspires me to to do it!

Heidi - March 16, 2012 - 9:49 am

I am drooling! So jealous of your farmer’s market. I wish they had something like that here in Vegas.

Heather M. - March 18, 2012 - 8:38 pm

10 on 10 {Los Angeles Photographer}

This month, my “10 on 10” project was “A Day in Manhattan Beach”!  From my home in El Segundo, it is exactly 1.6 miles to the beach.  Since it’s so close, I’m privileged to see the ocean several times a week, usually on one of my daily runs.   My kids also love to go play in the sand with their trucks and go for bike rides along “The Strand.”  One of our favorite destinations in Manhattan Beach, the next town south from El Segundo.

We love the little Roundhouse Aquarium at the end of the pier, watching the surfers, and sometimes locking up our bicycles and heading up the hill to the central plaza.  A couple of weeks ago, with my Sister-In-Law out for a visit from Pennsylvania, we treated her to a day doing some of our favorite things!  The bonus is that it was a Tuesday, the day of the weekly Manhattan Beach Farmer’s Market!

We enjoyed the warm February day on our bikes, watching the waves, picking out some organic produce, and feasting on some tasty bites. . . definitely a perfect SoCal day!

Breakfast at Schat’s Bakery {El Segundo Photographer}

I photographed the grand opening of David Schat’s Bakery Cafe in January, and last weekend I went back to spend a little more time with the star of the show — the food.  They have such an enormous offering of foods, from breakfast pastries to cakes and cookies to sweets to a full menu of sandwiches, soups, and salads.  And you can’t forget about the bread!  I have to confess, that every single thing I’ve tasted there is fantastic.  Seriously, it all tastes even better than it looks.  Let me tell you (as you’ll see in a moment) it all looks delicious.  A feast for the eyes, the taste buds, and the soul.  Next time you’re in the South Bay, it’s a worth a trip into El Segundo for a meal or snack from David Schat’s!

This post is an “Ode to Breakfast,” highlighting just a few of the tasty pastries you can start your day with!  Enjoy, and try to keep the drool off your keyboard! :-)

Mimic {Los Angeles Fine Art Photographer}

I was sorting through some old image files and came across one from last November that I had overlooked.  We had been at the  Beach, just under LAX’s runway, so we had a fantastic show of all the aircraft taking off.  I had liked this image, but never quite put my finger on why until tonight. . .

An airplane flies past an airplane shaped cloud.

See, I was scrolling through my image folders with all of the pictures minimized to small thumbnail size.  And that’s when it immediately grabbed me that the shape of the cloud was mimicking the airplane, almost as though the cloud was the shadow cast by the setting sun!  What I had missed in a large view, became quite obvious when I “stepped back” and took a second glance!

52 in 2012: Week 9 {spirit}

Another tough week for me! I’ve decided that, in theory, I like the idea of a theme for each week. In practice, not so much. I was intending this project would become a good journal of 2012 for my family. But I’ve found that by having a theme, I’m sometimes pushed to produce an image that doesn’t really have anything to do with what we did that week. But I guess that’s good. I can’t realistically cram 7 full days of happenings into 1 image. I just need to widen my expectation of this project. It doesn’t have to be the perfect synopsis of our week. And discomfort can be good — it means that if I persevere, I’ll learn something and grow in the process.

This week is {spirit} and after coming up empty-handed all week, the lightbulb clicked late this afternoon when my 2-year-old ran into the family room with swim goggles on and said, “C’mon, Mommy, let’s go in the sprinklers!”  Who could argue when the temperature was 80-degrees here in SoCal, so the kiddie pool and sprinklers came out!  At that very moment I decided that my interpretation of {spirit} was going to be {spirited} otherwise known as {spunk}.  This boy had plenty of whatever we’re calling it to go around!

Since I was going for {spunk} I grabbed my wide angle 16-35mm lens.  It’s the newest addition to my arsenal of lenses and it’s been fun to play with.  The distortion is a lot different than how I usually shoot, but at times, I’ve come to love it.  Just like today.

And, since I’m going way out there with my loose interpretation of the theme, and my crazy lens, I figure I’ll get even wilder and post 3 pictures for this week.  I might as well really go for it, eh?;-)  So, here it is, my 2-year-old, full of {spirit}!

How did I miss this post!!? Sorry! First off, I really really love wide angle shots. I love that first one and I stared at it for awhile. I think bc wide angle add a bit of dimension to a photo and I like that.
I think your goggle photos capture a wonderful spirit of fun and adventure that kids have! So for that, your take on the week’s theme was perfect!

This is a great take – I don’t know how I missed this post either.

I agree with you – I thought this challenge would be a good way to have at least 1 post each week for our family blog, but most of these themes have been my thoughts and feelings and not much to do with our family happenings – but I guess that’s good too!

Rhonda - March 9, 2012 - 8:27 am

oh man those are so cute!!!!!

stacey - March 9, 2012 - 9:41 am

I adore that first photo!!! Adore it!!!
