Friday Favorites {Bozeman Portrait Photographer}

It’s time for another installment of Friday Favorites. . . a few things that make my life simpler, easier, or just more fun and tasty!

1.  Cardboard boxes.  When it comes to kids, you just can’t beat a plain old cardboard box for fun.  I recently received a 20×30 canvas, which came in a box that was the perfect size for a toddler to hide in. . .

A toddler has fun playing in a large cardboard box.

In fact, it was actually the perfect size for a toddler and a four-year-old to hide in.  My boys were entertained for hours!

2.  Over-ripe bananas.  My favorite way to eat a banana is when it’s just turned from green to yellow and there’s the faintest hint of green still in the stem.  But when bananas start to look like this, it means a loaf of my favorite Marbled Chocolate Banana Bread is going to be baking in my oven.  Seriously, it’s the best banana bread.  Ever.

Three overripe bananas look perfect for making banana bread.

3.  NeilMed Sinus Rinse.  Okay, I’ll admit, it’s not pretty, but it’s been a lifesaver for me right in the middle of cold and flu season.   It’s like magic. . . gets rid of those sniffles in just a day or so, makes your sinuses instantly feel better, and if you continue it even while healthy it can actually help keep you from picking up new cold viruses.  And it’s not a drug, so unlike other cold meds, it doesn’t make you feel all foggy and groggy.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Have you tried the CL banana bread with coconut lime glaze (or something like that)? Also fabulous.

Birthday Boy {Bozeman Child Photographer}

Yesterday, my first-born child turned 4.  And while I have taken thousands of pictures of him since birth, I don’t often subject him to a formal photo shoot.  For one, he’s tired of the camera always being out.  For two, he knows all my tricks!  A few weeks ago he humored me for some pictures, but I was really wanting to get his full attention for a “4th birthday” photo shoot.  I’ve learned that if I push him too much or try to get those “perfect shots” too often, I just end up with nothing.  But if I’m going to go for it, right around his birthday is the perfect time.  In the first five years, I highly recommend getting professional portraits of your child at least once year.  The time goes so fast and they change so fast.  Birthdays are a fabulous time to document your little ones.  I treasure the images I got now, and I know they’ll just grow richer and even more valuable as the years pass!

So, one day last week, while little brother was peacefully napping, I met up with my son in his room and we spent about half an hour playing, talking, and having fun while I snapped away.

Did I mention silly?  We had plenty of that, too!

Hmmmm. . . tough questions that face a 4-year-old.

I’ll go ahead and admit right now that this way more than a sneak peek.  I typically only share a few images from each session on my blog, but since this just happens to be one of my absolute favorite people in the world (tied evenly with his little brother!) I’m sharing almost all of my favorites.  Which gives you a bit of an idea what you’ll get from a typical session with me.

All of those images were taken in front of the dresser in his room.  Who says you have to be limited when doing an indoor on-location photo shoot?  The beauty of taking photos in his space is that he was totally comfortable.  And I got to capture him in his element doing one of his favorite things–playing with his race cars.  Definitely something I’ll want to look back and remember about his preschooler days!

I convinced him to head to our family room for a few more photos before calling it a wrap.  After a few more minutes, he looked up at me and asked, “can I have my treat now?”  He definitely knows all of my tricks!

I’ll finish up by wishing a great big Happy Birthday to my favorite 4-year-old boy!  And I’ll add that if you have a young one with a birthday coming up, I’d love to capture their personality so you can always remember these days that pass way too quickly!

My World/Your World | Month 1 {Bozeman Portrait Photographer}

I know it’s a Friday Favorites day, but I’m going to be side tracking from that once a month to share a little project I’m working on called “My World/Your World”.  I’m a member of an all-female professional photographer’s forum and several of us paired up to do a weekly or monthly (I’m doing the monthly) photo challenge.  My partner-in-project is the talented Pensacola, FL based photographer Teresa Schramm of Merriment Photography.  We’ll tackle a theme and post our interpretations side-by-side the last week of every month.  This month’s theme is “black and white” and you can see that we had similar muses (our own children!).

Sunset {Bozeman Landscape Photographer}

I was truly amazed this evening at the gorgeous display of color in the western sky.  It was a rather unimpressive day, with particularly flat, gray skies in the late afternoon.  So I really noticed when I was in my kitchen cooking dinner around 5:30 and the light seemed to instantly change. . . I looked out the window, over the houses surrounding us, and saw some brilliant colors starting to emerge.  I dropped the knife, grabbed the camera, and ran out the door to the large empty field at the end of our block.

It was almost unreal, the display in the sky.  Gorgeous is an understatement!

San Antonio After Dark {Bozeman Landscape Photographer}

I have just a few more San Antonio images to share.  I love the Montana sky, but I have to admit that Texas had some pretty spectacular sunset displays in the few days that I was there.  And while Montana skies usually have mountains or horses along the horizon lines, San Antonio has some impressive architecture framing its skies.

The San Antonio sky glows a lovely shade of pink as the sun sets.

A graphic sculpture in San Antonio is silhouetted in front a beautiful purple dusk.

And even though there is no sky in this image, I loved the lines of the 8+ story parking garage, also something you just don’t see in Montana!

A parking garage has interesting lines with glowing evening lights.

That wraps up my whirlwind trip to Texas!   I think my dream job is “travel photographer.”  If only I didn’t have small children at home that I couldn’t bear to be apart from for weeks. . . maybe I’ve found myself a retirement job! :-)
