I love meeting a family at their home for a photo session. Everyone is relaxed and personalities shine through when surrounded by the comforts of home.

I also love that we can incorporate things beloved by the family, and that we can go inside or out. . .

. . . and change outfits a few times. And maybe, play peek-a-boo with your big sisters

As this awesome family can attest, an in-home session is a lovely choice!

Welcome Back! {Los Angeles Family Photographer}

If you saw my last post, you know I have hockey on the mind, which has been a theme in front of my camera lately. Just like the family in the previous post, this beautiful family also has a retired NHL player among its ranks! They spent considerable time in Los Angeles when Dad played for the L.A. Kings and now they’re back to stay. What better way to settle back in than to put our famous Los Angeles beaches to work in the backdrop of updated family pictures!

I have to take a second and give HUGE props to these awesome kids. . . to get the lovely morning light ideal for pictures, we met at the beach just as the sun was starting to come over the horizon. These kids were nice, polite, funny and really enjoyed each other’s company — a beautiful thing in and of itself, but before 7:00 a.m., well, I was very impressed!

Not only were the human kiddos happy, the furry one was, too!

Before their session ended, we had a chance to incorporate Mom’s idea of the kids wearing Dad’s old hockey jerseys. I love adding that personal touch to a session

Hat Trick {Los Angeles Family Photographer}

I adore this family! This is the third time I’ve photographed them and it really was a charm! Mom always comes up with a fun theme or the perfect colors for their holiday cards… the pops of red this year are just perfect with the greens and blues of the ocean in the background. The gorgeous kiddos make my job easy!

I especially love how they always find a way to incorporate their passion for hockey (Dad, after all, is a former NHL player who spent several years playing for the L.A. Kings). The Kings surfboard was the perfect addition to a beachy holiday card from an awesome hockey family

Montana Beauties {Los Angeles Family Photographer}

There’s just something about Montana girls and Montana scenery. . . the glow of the light, the twinkle in the eyes. I was so happy to have these beautiful sisters in front of my camera again!

I last photographed them 3 years ago, and this is the sweet littlest sister. . .

If that seems a bit familiar, when I saw those purple flowers near the bench at our session I immediately thought of one of my all time favorite photographs, which happens to be of the very same subject, photographed in 2011!

While this time, 3 years later, there was still plenty of sweetness, there was also a bit more spunk and confidence. Certainly the mark of an upcoming 2nd grader!

Moving on to middle sister, who I feel an instant connection with, as a middle child myself

And finally, big sister, who I think has changed the most in the last 3 years, particularly if you only consider added inches. . . she measured up right next to me at 5’4″ and is just a hair away from surpassing her mother!

It was such a gorgeous evening and I was so happy to spend it with these lovely ladies!

Once a Runner {Los Angeles Family Photographer}

… always a runner! A few years ago (thanks to Facebook!), I reconnected with one of my high school cross country teammates. It was fun to discover that nearly 20 years later, she is not only still running, she’s a mom to 5 amazing kiddos! She and her family have settled in South Carolina, and when my family made our annual trek to the beach outside Charleston, they made the trek to the beach and spent some time in front of my camera.

It was so fun to reconnect! I especially loved how they all take after their speedy mama, with smiles on their faces as they race across the sand! :-)

Sisterly Love {Los Angeles Family Photographer}

This is the session that almost didn’t happen! Several months ago, the mom of these sweet girls scheduled this session for the end of June, which was right after I was returning from a family trip back east. The problem arose when I returned from my trip as scheduled, but my camera didn’t. It’s a long, sordid story that boils down to my bag of equipment staying on a connecting airplane in Atlanta when I did not. The good news is that, according to the airline, they think they found my bag and it is on its way back to me as I type. It’s been quite the 2 weeks without “my baby,” but thankfully a bright spot in that 2 weeks was having these two sweet “babies” in front of a lens (that was so graciously loaned to me by a friend!).

Super sweet sisters on their own, and even better together!

The love was also spread to “girl’s best friend”. . .

I think you can see why they were a “bright spot” for me!

Familiar Faces {Los Angeles Family Photographer}

I just got back from a big family trip (which I’ll post more on later), and while a good chunk of the trip was “vacation,” I was able to sneak in a little bit of work, too. And when your “work” looks like this, it really is actually quite fun!

This session was even more fun, because I first met this family about 9 years ago when we were all living in Colorado. The military scattered us our separate ways back in 2008 and we’ve stayed in touch via Facebook in the mean time. Of course, a few members of the family were mere twinkles in their parent’s eyes back then, which is why it was even more fun to catch up with them now while I was on the road in Pennsylvania!

We had an amazingly fun time together, which I think is evident by all these smiles. . .

What better way to end a sneak peek than with a little sibling love?!

This lovely family came to me via Bakersfield and a shared connection from the past! One of my best friends is an amazing photographer — Erin Cobb — who happens to live in Alabama. A few years ago, she headed out to the West Coast for a fun girls’ weekend in the City of Angels, squeezing in a couple of family sessions while she was here. This party of five, long-time fans of Erin, made the trek to L.A. to get in front of her camera. Now, two years later, it’s time for updated family photos and they made the trek back to L.A. to get in front of my camera.

It was an honor, privilege, and darn great way to spend the afternoon!

Glowing inside and out, I think you can easily see why I had such a great time with them!

A New Addition {Los Angeles Family Photographer}

I had an absolutely amazing time with this family at their home a few weeks ago. They recently welcomed their third boy to the family and wanted to document all the love and excitement of these days.

With two big brothers (who really aren’t all that big yet, themselves), I knew I was in for a bit of wild time. But when this was literally the first image I took, I knew there was also magic in that wild!

Such a handsome trio of boys!

Who also happen to be sweet, kind, funny and loving, too. . .

I think it’s safe to say that this handsome new addition has landed in one pretty amazing family!

My last mini-session of the morning was this gorgeous crew!

They were literally all smiles for the entire session! Which may, or may not, have had anything to do with a certain father doing crazy dances or something behind me.

I kinda wish I had eyes behind my head, but the view through my lens was pretty darn awesome, so I wasn’t too concerned with what was going on behind me.

And maybe it wasn’t all dad bringing those smiles out, cause I got some pretty darn awesome ones when all subjects were in front of the camera, too!

This family kept up my streak of fabulous morning clients, arriving on the beach perfectly styled and ready to go! A beautiful color palate with pops of the most perfect prints in just the right spots!

I kicked off my fall mini-sessions here in Los Angeles with this sweet family. They were up bright and early so we could get the prettiest morning light on the beach, but their early alarm clock setting was worth it!

From little sister to big sister, the smiles were flowing. . .

. . . and a great time was had by all!

A Common Thread {Los Angeles Family Photographer}

One of the things I love about my job is getting to spend time with so many families. During the course of our photo session, I get a glimpse into their world. . . the sibling love, the sibling spats, the shy-at-first baby, the rambunctious grade schooler and sweet toddler. While every family is unique, there always comes a point during the session that I see a reflection of my own family. There are moments, experiences and phrases I witness that could be me, my husband and two sons on the other side of that camera. I love seeing first hand the common threads that run through all families.

This handsome guy is the same age as my own oldest son and I know they would become fast friends if given the opportunity. . .

I felt an instant kinship with this cutie. . . I think it’s the middle child in both of us!

And this sweet pea, full of smiles and curiosity reminds me my younger son when he was that age. . .

Watching the three kiddos together, it was flashbacks to my own childhood and my own kiddos in the same instant. There was sweet, loving, giggly and silly (with a good share of craziness between shots)!

Fab Family of Five {El Segundo Family Photographer}

I was beyond excited to get this fabulous family in front of my camera!

We had a morning session and there’s just something magical about that early light. The downside of a summer morning session is that you have to get out there early to get that magical light. . . these kiddos were such troopers, though, waking up early on their first weekend after starting school earlier in the week.

As you can see, they were full of smiles, not shy about showing off their sibling bond!

Told you they were fab!

I have had the pleasure of photographing this lovely family for several years and it’s always a joy to see these kiddos get cuter and cuter every time!

Pigtails get me every time. . . and the set on this little beauty are definitely in the running for best ever!

Lest his little sister steal the show, this handsome guy was quite the ham, too. It happened to be a very special day, his 4th birthday! I was delighted that he’d share a few moments of his special day with me and loved hearing about his plans for the dinosaur birthday party on tap later that afternoon.

I’ll finish off with one great shot of the entire family, set in front of one of my favorite Bozeman backdrops. . .
